Brother

Henry Chapman was a frail and sickly child. His sister Vittwia watched over him and even slept on the floor beside his bed so she could tend his needs during the night. But when Henry was 20 years old he announced he was joining a wagon train bound for Oregon.

“The others laughed at me when, upon hearing the news, I cried out, ‘Poor Henry! Who will cover your feet and give you your medicine if I do not go along?’ Vittwia recalled.

“Henry went off to Oregon without me. It was while he was in the Rogue River country that he shot a grizzly bear and carelessly did not reload his rifle. He went to examine the dead bear, which was a huge one, but as he approached the bear came alive and attacked my poor brother, mauling him terribly.

“Two men who had been hunting with Henry heard his screams. They doubled back and killed the grizzly. They thought Henry was dead and tied him across his horse to bring him in for a Christian burial. But the motion of the horse caused Henry to start breathing again and by the grace of God the doctor in Jacksonville was able to save my brother’s life, although he was horribly disfigured.

“After this tragedy I felt it was my responsibility to come out west. My first duty was to Henry. Over all the years I cared for Henry I did not marry or have a sweetheart because I never wanted my brother to feel as though he were playing second fiddle.”
